Electronic Drum Trousers Take Young Engineer Prize

Drummer and engineer Aseem Mishra got tired of lugging his drum kit to gigs. Naturally, he fashioned a pair of musical jeans to take its place. The pants -- sorry, trousers -- have eight sensors woven into the fabric, and are hooked up to a backpack with circuitry and speakers. Each sensor corresponds to a different drum, and hitting them duplicates the sound of their real-world equivalents. Mishra took first prize in his age group in the Young Engineer of Great Britain Competition -- a repeat of last year, when he won for a light-up drum kit.

The jeans really need to be seen (and heard), so check out the video here. And keep an ear out for this morsel at :50. "Do I haf to whock it hawd?"

How to Understand the Physics of Portal

Portal, a Sci-fi puzzle-platform game released by Valve in 2007 for Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360, Playstation 3 (and more recently, Mac OS X), offers a very unique approach to gaming. Instead of outwitting an enemy with sheer force and firepower, you must complete puzzle games and use your brain to win. You do this with the aid of the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device (ASHPD, also known as a "portal gun"): a device that can create inter-spatial portals between flat planes.

While the game is designed in a way to help you understand the concept of portals, it can still be a difficult idea to grasp, as it is a completely new way of thinking that humans have never had to use before. That, perhaps, is how you ended up here.

Priority Inbox Algorithm Co-Opted to Make Better Gmail Ads

google logoGoogle announced today that it'll be instituting some changes to tailor the ads that appear in your inbox to your interests. Using the algorithm set up for Priority Inbox, Google can now better understand what is actually relevant to a user. The company is basically implementing the same technology used to sort your inbox for a more commercial (and probably more profitable) pursuit. For instance, if you get tons of bacn e-mails from travel websites but never read them, maybe travel ads aren't actually such a clever idea.

Even if you never click those ads in Gmail, the change will probably make for a somewhat more pleasant user experience. In my inbox right now there is an ad up for "The Most Authentic Biking & Hiking - Tours Of Italy Since 1989." That would be lovely if I were a 50-year-old millionaire, but frankly it just comes across as cruel.
